Pulse Manual Index

Overview

The email configuration section allows you to configure the SMTP server used to send email notifications from pulse™. If you are unsure of the details for your SMTP server, consult the settings in you email client, or ask your system administrator.

smtp host

The hostname for the server used to send email.

Examples

Usually you will use a mail server configured on your local network, such as:

mail.example.com

connect via ssl

Check this box to use a secure connection to your SMTP server if it supports SSL.

subject prefix

If provided, this string will be prepended to the subject line for all messages emailed from your pulse™ server. This is useful to allow users to filter received emails with their email client.

Examples

[pulse]

from

Specifies the from address for all emails sent from your pulse™ server. When a user receives an email from pulse™, it will appear to be from this address. By using an address that is read by your pulse™ administrator, people may reply to the mail to discuss issues. However, there is no requirement that the address corresponds to a real mailbox, and it is uncommon for users to reply to an automatically-generated email.

Examples

pulse@example.com

username

If your SMTP server requires authentication, then you must provide a username for logging into the server. This may be any user's username, or you may ask your administrator to create an account for pulse™.

password

If your SMTP server requires authentication, then you must provide a password for logging into the server. This must be the password for the username specified above.

use a custom port

Check this box if you need to specify a port other than the default.

port

The port to connect to your SMTP server on.

localhost

The local host name (i.e. host name for the machine running Pulse) to use in SMTP transactions. Normally, this field is not required as Pulse will guess a suitable default. However, some SMTP servers place certain requirements on the local host that are not always met by the default. For example, the server may require a fully-qualified host name (foo.example.com) and Pulse may supply just the simple host name (foo). In this case you can provide the exact host name required in this field.

pulse.example.com
